IM_PULSE
IM_PULSE – The peaked tip of The Shard, a well-lit landmark on the London skyline, pulsates with lights determined in their rhythm by the real-life, live pulse of a member of the British public on the streets below. The visual transmission of this most fundamental human function, broadcast as far as the eye can see thanks to the prominence of its illuminated position, is a symbol for respect and tolerance, the very basis for a long-lasting, sustainable society and environment for us to live in.
Whereas previous projects, such as MY HEART IN RIO, created light-kinetic sculptures through the artist’s own heartbeat, IM_PULSE will be driven by people from all over the UK, from geographically and socially diverse backgrounds, making their heartbeat visible on London’s iconic skyscraper far beyond the country’s internal borders.
In a unique interaction between architecture, art and the human body, a pulse-measuring clock will send people’s heartbeat to the Shard Lights in the spire of the 72-storey building. Twenty people chosen from all over the UK will each supply the Shard with their heart’s rhythm for one night over the corresponding period. The hopes and wishes of the heartbeat donor will be presented on an official online platform, as well as in traditional and new media.
In the light of today’s complex global issues and changing environment, IM_PULSE is a beacon of diversity, solidarity, respect and tolerance. The heartbeat of a chosen few stands for the heartbeat of our communities and the natural pulse of our ecosystem that can only survive if we take on both individual and communal responsibility.
